A Delicious Shower

I have said before I believe God wants us to enjoy sex but it wasn’t until my shower the other day that I felt I truly grasped why.

I live in the North now but I used to live in the desert. The sun was a constant in my life. I felt I had seen him in every attitude but nothing could have prepared me for the sun in the winter. The sun in the desert is almost a little oppressive, snuffing out any weak flora and fauna in its glare. The plants grow rigid, sharp and hardy or not at all. The animals are small and skinny and only seen at dawn and dusk save for the birds.

In the north the sun is a friend. He nourishes everything. He grows the plants plump, green and lush and in the winter nature is revived for a time in all its splendor; somehow, even more vibrant than in the showy summer. Nature seems to shout out in exhalation at briefly meeting her dear friend again and if there is snow it seems to endeavor to bathe all it can in the honey yellow light.

So when I stripped naked, stepped into the scalding hot shower to escape some of the winter chill and was greeted by the syrupy sweet winter sunshine drenching my body I exalted as one with nature.

I glanced up to praise God for the glorious shower and saw myself looking back through the white tile above me. Nude, smiling, exultant, my long black hair rippling with the water across my body, I realized pleasure slows us down enough to give praise.

I knew this before of course, this is a universal truth almost. It’s part of the reason for the liturgical feast days, but something about the rawness of my nude form reveling, illuminated in the winter sun reflected back to me from above as I imagine God looks at us from above, and as I was mid prayer made me grasp further the purity of sex and sexual pleasure.

The blooming warmth of orgasm is meant to be enjoyed every bit as much as the warmth the sun was giving my naked body and the rest of nature because God created it all. He made mountains in breathtaking formations and he crafted the delicate folds of our body. He made man fit with woman perfectly and he made marriage and mandated us to withhold nothing from our spouse. God is good and sex is good.
